Travel Photo Roulette #84: Candid

Travel Photo Roulette #84 Candid

UPDATED I have chosen the winner! Scroll down past the intro to see who truly captured the ‘Candid’ theme. Thanks so much to everyone who entered!!

I’ve been home in Seattle for almost a month now, but I’ve been keeping myself super busy writing, editing photos and… entering photography competitions! Two weeks ago, I entered into Travel Photo Roulette #83: Summer hosted by Turtles Travel, and believe it or not, I actually won!!

I was really shocked that Heather and Donny chose me as the winner because there were so many amazing photos submitted. I really liked the “summer” theme because it always summons memories of sun, warm beaches and relaxation. It was a tough choice, but I eventually submitted a photo I took from a family cruise to the Bahamas after my college graduation.

The contest will be open for one week starting Sunday August 10th- Sunday August 17th

The winner will be announced Tuesday August 19th Submissions now closed

Travel Photo Roulette #84

“If you’ve never visited an ostrich farm in South Africa, you’ll now know that ostriches *love* corn! As in, they go absolutely crazy for it. If you try and hold a bucket of corn for them to eat, the corn is flying everywhere!”

There were so many amazing submissions, and it was really hard to make a decision, but after much deliberation, I finally decided on this photo by Travel with Kevin and Ruth! The first time I saw this submission I literally laughed out loud. There’s just something about his laughter, combined with the ostriches and corn flying everywhere that really made this photo memorable. He truly looks like he’s enjoying the moment, which is what travel is all about! Congratulations Travel with Kevin and Ruth, I can’t wait to see what theme you come up with next!

Contest Overview

The contest rotates through travel/photography blogs, so the winner of the previous round of Travel Photo Roulette hosts the subsequent round on their own blog. The new host then chooses the next theme (a generic keyword or phrase) and people submit their interpretations of the theme over the course of the week of the contest.

At the end of the week, the hosting blogger chooses their favorite photo from the submissions and displays it as the week’s winning entry. They then include direction to the new host for the next round. Readers can attempt to sway the author into picking a certain photo via comments, but the author can ignore comments as they see fit. The game is repeated with the winner hosting the following week’s game and choosing a phrase for new photo submissions.

Feel free to share this post on Facebook, Twitter and StumbleUpon so more people can join the contest – make sure to use the hashtag #PhotoRoulette!

  1. Congratulations on your win!
For this topic I would like to add a photo I shot quite a while ago in Turkey in the small town of Iznik. I was sitting on a bench waiting for my wife, and across the road this shoe cleaner went to work with real dedication. That he owned one of these traditional boxes with hammered and polished brass on the outside only added to the flair of the setting. I had to be patient, because there was constantly traffic crossing between me and him…

  2. My photo I would like to add is from my trip to Milan last year. I went with my boyfriend and one day we decided to walk to this fountain and hang out with our feet in. Everyone was enjoying the beautiful day in the sun. My favorite part was watching these two little boys playing in the fountain as if they were in their own back yard. Not a care in the world.

  3. Congratulations on winning! As I get older, I appreciate photography more and more on my travels but also regret all the photos I should have taken on earlier trips :) The girl listening to music for the first time in Petra is probably my favorite, utterly candid, utterly beautiful.

  4. Congrats on the win! Great subject but I had a hard time deciding until I remembered that moment: http://zigzag-on-earth.smugmug.com/Travel/Europe/Austria-Innsbruck/i-fMZ2Lnk/0/M/IMG_5920-M.jpg
    Peaceful walk in the mountains

This took place in the mountains near Innsbruck I had been walking around and was tired so I sat on a bench. At one point I turned around (nice views in every direction) and saw that monk. I quickly grabbed my camera and snapped this shot. Later on I discussed with him and he granted me the authorization to use any shots as long as we could not recognized him. I have further shots where he is incredibly climbing rocks and steep areas with only flip flops but those are not candid. A great meet!

  5. Congratulations on your win! And Candid is such a fun theme – we’re so excited to participate :)
