So what exactly is the Teach Abroad Squad, and why did I create this course and community for people who want to rock their first year teaching in China?
Whether you’re looking for some teach abroad guidance, or you’re just really curious to learn more about this online course I’ve created, you’ve come to the right place!
Let’s Start From the Beginning…
My first year teaching abroad in China was kind of a disaster.
Firstly, I used a teach abroad program that placed me at a school all by myself in the middle of nowhere “Factoryville” where I was the only foreigner for miles.
Not only that, but I was super underpaid, my school wasn’t legally allowed to hire foreign teachers, and had a stipulation in the contract that if I wanted to leave early, I could be fined up to $8,000 USD, aka MY ENTIRE SALARY FOR THE WHOLE YEAR.
How did this happen to me?? I’d studied abroad in China for 7 months. I was fluent in Chinese. I had traveled all over the country to off the beaten path places like Qinghai, Tibet, and Xinjiang. I had lived on my own in Beijing for a month and taught English part-time at a training center.
There were so many things I didn’t know. I was too trusting, naive, and overconfident. But arriving at my first school in the middle of nowhere was a nice big slap of reality, straight in the face. Maybe I didn’t know as much as I thought I did…
5 Years Later, I Finally Cracked the Code
Fast-forward five years: I’m sitting in my private office with a view of downtown Beijing. I’m making literally four times the salary with a nice apartment, working as a college counselor at a high-level training center.
In just two years of working here, I’d saved up $40,000 USD (without even really trying), and completely paid off my student loans. I had 20 vacation days, a comprehensive benefits package, and a job that actually fulfilled me.
So what, am I just some teach abroad genius or something? How did I do it??
I’m not a genius. I’m not special. I just finally cracked the code after 5 years of trial, error, and a LOT of bumps along the way.
I Want to Give You a Better Experience
I really wish I could go back in time and give myself all the information and guidance I have now. I’d probably have WAY more money in the bank, and way fewer grey hairs.
But unfortunately, time travel isn’t a thing (yet), so I guess I’ll have to settle for helping all of you instead!
To be completely honest, I’m sick to death of hearing horror stories about people getting stuck in scam jobs that aren’t paying them on time. I’m tired of people working at crappy (and racist) training centers or working with teach abroad programs that underpay you and don’t provide what they promise.
I made it my mission to give you guys unbiased information about living and working in China. I created free guides, led free webinars, published post after post about teaching in China, and even created a teach abroad Youtube channel.
But sometimes that’s just not enough. The number of people who came to me looking for personalized help, guidance, and consulting was honestly so overwhelming I was literally AFRAID of my email.
The more I wrote, the more questions I received. The more content I created, the more I realized that it was never going to be enough.
Why I Created the Teach Abroad Squad
About two years ago I realized that if I really wanted to make an impact on the teach abroad industry, I’d need to leave my job as a college counselor and take my teach abroad consulting full time.
I wanted to help people achieve their teach abroad goals the FIRST time around, as quick and painlessly as humanly possible. So I created a course and community to do just that!
Over the next year, I designed the perfect system that walks teachers through the entire process step-by-step. I filled in all the gaps left by most recruiters, TEFLs, and teach abroad programs to create the ultimate course and community, led by a REAL teacher with 5 years of experience.
I realized that most of the people coming to me for advice were just drowning in a sea of information with no idea who to trust.
How do you make sure that your recruiter is actually looking out for your best interests when they’re getting paid by the school to find you? Why is it that Teach Abroad programs give such low salaries, and the best TEFL programs are all $3,000??!
So I sat down and over the course of a year, I took all of the best advice and information I’ve learned over the last 5 years and created an affordable step-by-step system to take you through the ENTIRE teach abroad process from start to finish.
What is the Teach Abroad Squad?
The Teach Abroad Squad is my proven step-by-step system to help you find a high-paying job you LOVE, become an incredible teacher, and survive (and thrive) in China once you get there.
The Teach Abroad Squad is so much more than just an online course. As part of the program, I also provide unbiased job placement, monthly Q&A calls, incredible discounts on your TEFL certification, unlimited email coaching and contract/ resume reviews, a Facebook group of other members and so much more!
Teach Abroad Squad is the very first course and community for people who want to have a high paying job and an incredible experience in China the FIRST time around, without years of trial and error.
What People Are Saying About Teach Abroad Squad
Don’t just take it from me, here’s what people have to say about Teach Abroad Squad!
“The thought of moving to China alone can be overwhelming, but TAS goes over everything you need to know to be successful during your time abroad. Richelle makes the lessons very engaging and fun by providing personal insights and stories from her own time living and working in China. The biggest takeaway for me was how to avoid scams and what to look for in contracts. I’ve heard so many horror stories about companies promising one thing only for it to be taken away or changed later. I now know how to read contracts, how to negotiate salary and vacation days, and how to handle any complications down the road. I have also found great value in the group video chats and have made friends that I know I can turn to for any advice in the future.” – Hillary Hancock, Teach Abroad Squad Member
Here’s one more from Sarah who just arrived in China this August 2019!
“I originally joined because I was overwhelmed by all the information out there of what you should and shouldn’t do and I was getting lost in the sea of it all. Then I came across Richelle’s Instagram and blog and realized this is a real person giving real stories of life in China. I felt really good about enrolling in TAS because I knew I’d need help and have questions to ask. I honestly wasn’t even sure where I wanted to teach, but I think what helped me decide was the fact that Richelle had done a lot of the work for me with everything China! Joining the Teach Abroad Squad gave me more confidence that I won’t be going into teaching abroad blindly.” – Sarah Anderson, Teach Abroad Squad Member
How do I join the Teach Abroad Squad?

I’m Sure You’ve Got Some Questions
I can already tell right now that you’ve probably got a ton of questions, so let me just quickly answer a few of them for you here!
Q. I’m a non-native speaker/ I don’t have a degree. Can I still work with you?
YES. There are a few non-native speakers and TAS members without college degrees in the program. I’m happy to talk with you about your options on a call!
Q. I’m not in the US. How Can I Call You?
Fun fact: I’m not in the US right now either! All calls will be over Zoom (I’ll send you a link to join), and there are plenty of different times available so anyone in any time zone can chat with me. I promise I won’t force you to get on the phone with me at 2 am.
Q. How much is Teach Abroad Squad going to cost me?
There are a few different pricing options depending on what you’re looking for. I’ll be sure to go through all of them with you on the free discovery call so we can find the right fit for you! Rest assured, I’ve designed Teach Abroad Squad so that you can recoup more than 10x your initial investment by using the skills I teach in the program. There’s also a pretty hefty TEFL discount as part of the package too!
Q. I already have a job… is this right for me?
Teach Abroad Squad is primarily for people who have not yet signed a contract or are looking to switch to a new and better position. While you’re welcome to get on a call with me to discuss options, just know that you won’t get quite as much out of the program if you already have a job you love and aren’t looking to make any changes.
Q. I’m not teaching abroad for another year or two, is it too early to join?
I can never say this enough. When it comes to teaching abroad, the earlier the better! Seriously, applying for jobs and getting your visa takes FOREVER. Many TAS members joined over a year before they plan to arrive in China.
